Terms of Service
These Terms of Service govern your use of the Inside the Newsroom website. By using the site, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site. They sit alongside our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy, which cover data and tracking separately from these use terms.
The short version
- Read and share the site freely; don't republish it as your own.
- We are an independent educational resource, not CBC.
- Facilities change, so details may go out of date — tell us when they do.
- Nothing here is professional, legal, or employment advice.
- These terms can be updated; this page always carries the current version.
What this site is
Inside the Newsroom is an independent educational resource about CBC News production facilities. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by CBC. The site is provided for general information and educational purposes. We publish explanations of how a broadcast newsroom operates — how a control room is laid out, how an anchor desk and studio floor fit together, how a story moves from a field crew to air, and how regional bureaus feed national programming.
The content is written for students, journalists, production staff, and curious viewers who want a plain-language account of the work behind a newscast. Names of programmes, buildings, and production roles appear for descriptive purposes only. Where we describe a specific facility, we are explaining how that kind of facility generally works rather than publishing an official account.
If you need an authoritative statement about CBC, its services, or its programming, use CBC's own channels. Use this site to understand the production process.
Where the material comes from
- 01 Publicly available descriptions of broadcast facilities and studio design.
- 02 Widely documented production roles — directors, producers, floor managers, editors, technicians.
- 03 General broadcast practice as taught in journalism and media-production courses.
- 04 Corrections and clarifications sent in by readers and working professionals.

Stripping attribution so the work reads as someone else's original writing misrepresents where it came from.

Presenting the site as official CBC material
This site is an independent explainer. Do not use it in a way that suggests endorsement by CBC or any broadcaster.
If you are unsure whether a particular use is covered, ask us before you publish. Contact details are on the contact page.
Accuracy
We try to keep the site accurate and up to date, but broadcast facilities and workflows change. We do not guarantee that every detail is current or complete. If you find an error, please tell us through the contact page.
A control room can be rebuilt over a summer break. A regional bureau can move floors, gain a studio, or lose one. Software that once sat on a dedicated desk may now run from a laptop. When we are told about a change, we update the page and note the revision date. Where we cannot confirm a detail, we either leave it out or say plainly that practice varies between facilities.
Corrections are welcome from anyone — students, working crew, or viewers who noticed something that no longer matches what they see on air. Tell us what is wrong, which page it is on, and if you can, what the current situation is. That is enough for us to check it.
No professional advice
The content on this site is general information about broadcast production. It is not professional, legal, or employment advice, and it should not be relied on as such.
Describing how a control room is staffed is not a job description, and it is not a promise that a given role exists at a given broadcaster. If you are applying for work, negotiating a contract, or making a decision about your own career, talk to the people who actually hold the details — the employer, a union, a lawyer, or an adviser who knows your situation.
Third-party links
The site may link to third-party websites. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices.
Outbound links usually point to broadcaster pages, trade publications, or educational material we think is useful for context. Once you follow one, that site's own terms and privacy policy apply. If a link has stopped working or now points somewhere unexpected, tell us and we will review it.

Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site or from reliance on its content.
This covers, for example, a decision you make after reading a page here, a link that no longer works, or time lost because a detail has gone out of date. The site is offered as it stands, without warranties about completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted availability.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The current version is always available on this page. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
When something material changes, we revise the date shown at the top of the page. Earlier versions are not kept online; if you need to know what a previous version said, contact us and describe what you are looking for.
